Why Do You Need Thai Yoga Therapy?

Lack of Mobility
When your lifestyle is sitting at a desk all day, holding your body in the same position, evenings on the couch and waking up stiff - you have a lack of movement. Too much of this creates weakness, discomfort and eventually pain. Your body is designed to move, it likes it, that is why you get sore when you don’t move it enough. It talks to you with aches and pain - I don’t like this!

Injury
Have you had car accidents, sprained ankles, or hurt yourself playing sports? Injuries have lasting effects on the body, even those 20 years old! So does repetitive movement like bad posture, repeated factory or yard work. These cause stress and over time weaken muscle tissue. Think of a wire, when you bend it back and forth repeatedly it gets weak - keep going eventually it breaks.

Fatigue
You work long hours, maybe you’re doing the work of two people or you work, manage your home and the kids schedule - not finding any time for yourself. You go to bed late, get less than 8 hours of rest or have an interrupted sleep because your mind won’t shut off - thinking about work, running lists of all the things that need doing or keep needing to use the bathroom. These all affect good quality restful sleep.

Stress Relief
You’ve experienced an overwhelming threatening event that left you with disproportionate responses like screaming at the kids when they forgot to put their clothes away or your colleague because they sat where you normally do at lunch. These excessive reactions to situations create tension in your relationships. Or perhaps you feel like you’re on alert - walking on eggshells all the time. You likely have a sensitive nervous system and it needs a break, time to reset and learn how to be regulated again.

Body & Mind
You want to understand the connection between your thoughts and bodily sensations. What do they mean, why are they there, and how do I fix them? Aches, pains, emotions, thoughts are a language your body and system’s use to interact with each other saying “Hey, something’s up - you should check that out!” That is your body & mind warning you of a possible problem.

Ignoring These Problems Could Lead To

- Increased pain sensations that lead to future weakness, immobility, injury and/or more severe chronic pain syndromes
- Misuse of muscle recruitment, this means other muscles will take over the job, compensating for the one that isn’t working or no recruitment at all causing muscle atrophy - it just stops working!
- A disconnection from your mindbody system as a whole, leaving you unaware of underlying issues that could’ve prevented future health problems
- Decreased longevity - lack of healthy muscle and fascial tissue and movement creates a perfect environment for disease to manifest via inflammation in your body. Getting older this ‘inflammation’ will be more uncomfortable and limit what you can do.
- Increased chance of injury - during workouts, outdoor activities, and adventure/high performance sports due to stressing the tissues, unexplored movement that is not trained for, and increased wear and tear from repetitive movement
How Can Thai Yoga Therapy Help?
It’s a manual ‘hands on’ body treatment done fully clothed (no oil) on a padded floor mat. It’s a ‘passive’ movement massage session - that means you let me do all the work for you! I gently move your body where it lets me into yoga like shapes, the only thing you need to do... is let it happen! No need to use your muscles useless I ask.
When I take you into those shapes I prepare the joint with some movement, once you’re in position you often feel a stretch, then I apply static acupressure. This steady pressure relieves muscle tension by telling the tissues to let go, inducing a relaxation response. The yoga like shapes will train the body for increased flexibility and the joint movement helps to improve mobility and a fuller range through it.
The entire treatment is calming on the nervous system, because I work at a slow pace, gradually applying touch and listening carefully to what your body is telling me. Also, the movements are rhythmic often lulling you into sleep or that sweet spot in between - like in meditation!

Benefits Of Thai Yoga Therapy
Let’s start with Stress and Tension relief - most of us can relate and want that, Right?!? Then you get increased circulation - blood and lymphatic flow that stagnates from all that seating.
No more joint pain and improved range of motion through it. And, those of you who don’t want to go to yoga class but want more flexibility and better posture - this is for you. The treatment will free up the energy blocks, open up the chest for deeper breath, and put you into such a deep relaxation you may never want to leave.
Stress Resilience
When you’re stressed, let’s face it, that's most of us these days, one of two branches of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) gets activated. The sympathetic branch - the fight/flight/freeze response. This is an unconscious response to external stimulus coming in via your senses to the spinal cord then up your brain, saying - “Hey, you're in danger!”
It’s your internal alarm system!!!
Today’s over-stimulated nervous system communicates stress as danger to your brain. So when you’re ‘Stressed Out’ your nervous system and brain think you're being attacked by a Bear!
I work to switch that alarm system to turn on the other branch of the ANS - the parasympathetic rest/digest response. This response works the same except it tells your brain you’re safe! And when you feel safe, you'll feel less stress, anxiety and be less reactive.
Activating your rest/digest response regularly decreases time spent in your fight/flight/freeze response and becomes less reactive to perceived danger - the ‘stressors’ of life.
You become more Resilient in your life!
Tension Relief
Muscles that are weak, overworked, or have dysfunctional movement patterns can develop tension and removing it is a good place to start restoring those tissues and feeling better...enter Chantelle!
What you call ‘knots’ I call adhesions - these are small links that form between the muscles in the fascial layers. Fascia is the connective tissue that holds muscles together and let’s them glide over each other.
When an adhesion forms in the fascia, think of it like a cotton face pad, pull it apart and you have fine links that connect the other side. Unlike the cotton face pad an adhesion feels different under the skin - it’s bumpy, griddy, or stringy.
I break up those adhesions so the fascia can glide over each other again. Helping the muscle move freely and releasing some of the pull on it that feels like tension from the muscle.
Ah, freedom…
Fascial Release
The fascia I’m talking about here is the “myofascial layer” of tissue that wraps around the muscle like a stocking and allows them to glide over each other - organs too! When this is dried out (you’re dehydrated) or bound together from not moving it creates stiffness, remember those adhesions I was talking about before, left alone it will decrease your mobility and flexibility.
Drink your water and come see me!
I will free up those layers of fascia giving you smooth movement again and less pull and constriction on your muscles and organs.
Those of you suffering with chronic pain syndrome can experience relief from this treatment as well.
Why?
Because the fascial system is home to many sensory receptors, often immobility masquerades here as muscle tension causing pain.
Release the Fascia - Soothe the Pain!
Breathe Freely
You have muscle and fascia attached and surrounding your rib cage which houses and protects your lungs and diaphragm. When I release that tension/constriction it aids in the proper function of those organs allowing you to breathe better and deeper.
Those dealing with asthma, shallow breath, or underdeveloped function of your diaphragm can improve these problems by releasing the tension that restricts them and allows for a more optimal function of your whole breathing apparatus.
Breathing more freely and deeper will help to regulate your nervous system. This leads to relief of stress, anxiety, and restful sleep.
So, if you’re feeling like you can’t breathe and out of energy, having trouble sleeping or worse insomnia, and sleeping disorders you may need to come see me. You’ll be surprised that with one treatment you can experience improvements within the first 24hrs.
I often hear how people feel more open and they slept so deep that night. This is a great way to begin to turn those “Awe Geez” into Zzzz!!!!
Warning
Your mood might elevate changing emotional patterns to blissful joyous states. You might find hidden energy or start doing things you haven’t done since you were younger. All this from receive touch? Yep, physical contact, our sense of touch, is super important for our survival, we can live without it!

Hi, I'm Chantelle
It’s been many years and I’m still expanding my practice and fine tuning my knowledge to be as current and up to date in Thai Massage, The MindBody, Yoga and it’s sister science - Ayurveda. I’ve become an educator, practitioner and instructor of them. I use my skills, knowledge, and expertise gained from all of these modalities in treatment - Thai Yoga Therapy and Movement-Yoga classes. They’ve taught me to look at the whole person, not just the injury, aches or pains a person has complaints about or how they move and position their body.
My studies over the years and personal experience with migraines, depression, anxiety, and PTSD showed me we need to treat the whole person, mind & body, and care for them in a way that is informed, kind and compassionate. Getting to know what is happening beyond their aches and pain! And sometimes - it’s just that - ‘aches and pains’ which can be treated and done. Other times they are a symptom of something more complex.
The beauty of Thai Yoga Therapy is that you don’t need to talk about those complex issues in detail, a mere mention of them is enough to help facilitate healing. Why? Because it informs me, gives me more input on how to approach your treatment plan.
I tell you this from personal experience. All of these modalities helped to improve my complex issues. They brought awareness to my mindbody connection, worked out the tension and trauma that has been stored in my body for years, and gave me tools to regulate my sensitive nervous system. They’ve taught me how I could change my life if I change the relationship with myself.
First, I needed to get to know and tune into who I was - develop my self awareness - I got there through my body. I learned that sensations in my body are a language. My body was talking to me, telling me it hurt and needed attention!
My goal is to help facilitate that kind of change in Your Life!!!
We can take that first step together through the body work and movement-yoga classes I do. If you begin to feel good in your body, I can assure you, it will open up doors that you didn’t think possible. You can perform in ways you used to or have always wanted to. Find relief from physical and mental stress, balance your sensitive nervous system and alleviate your aches and pain. You’ll be working with someone who understands, cares and will support you as we move through the steps of discomfort to relief and freedom. Or, if you're only looking to feel deeply relaxed we can do that too!!!
With compassion,
Chantelle

My work continues to be informed by my personal experience and continuing education. I like to be on the forefront of new information. I’m always reading and taking courses to stay current. What is exciting is that we live in a spectacular time.
Today, science supports with evidence based studies what ancient healing practices have known for thousands of years and uses a whole person approach - a Biopsycosocial model. Bio - your body and systems, Psycho - thought, behaviour, emotion, memory, and Social - your outer environment - job, family, friends, culture, community. It is important to understand that your mindbody works together in an intricate ecosystem where all systems influence and affect one another - there is no separation.
Mind blowing isn’t?!?
Experienced
All my studies thread together and feed into one another so I can understand YOU - the whole person.
I also use my personal pain experience as a relational tool to support your pain complaints or challenges. Using this whole person approach - Biopsychosocial model - we can peel away layers to get to the root cause of your complaints. This will influence your healing with more awareness, active participation and give you back control of your health and wellness. With lasting sustainability for resilience.
That’s right - you’ll bounce back better!
I’ve been using this approach with clients for a few years and see first hand how their bodies and mindset changes and improves.
Awareness
I have always been a very observant person. I pay close attention to detail and I’m the curious type who likes to explore.
These are all great qualities when it comes to searching for the cause of a pain or discomfort you're experiencing.
As you progress with treatments I’ll keep looking at the information you share with me and what we feel and see happening in your body. Like any great detective I use the evidence and my informed intuition to guide me to the answers. You might have guessed - I loved the game Clue as a kid!
The body changes and heals over time. Remember your aches and pains didn’t just happen - unless it’s the result of an injury. Let’s keep in mind it can take time to rehabilitate and remap the mindbody system.
Having patience and determination will help you achieve your healing goals.
